Ribose is a pentose (5 carbon sugar) that is naturally found in the diet. It acts as backbone of DNA, RNA and adenine nucleotides. The pentose phosphate pathway produces a chemical called as PRPP which is used in the synthesis of ATP in the muscle. It is proposed that ribose supplement will bypass the limiting factors in the pathway to increase PRPP synthesis and enhances the restoration of ATP levels in the cells if these are reduced by exercises.
